Rebooting

I am not going to lie, I love when fairytales and myths get rebooted. If you are not familiar with the term think to your favorite comic book heroes, how many times in the past 20 years have their stories been told and retold through cinema, sequels, graphic novels, etc...Rebooting is the "revamping" or "rewriting" of a story to make it new while maintaining its distinctive elements. This process annoys most people that I have discussed this issue with [need I mention the "new Star Wars movies...damn you, JarJar], but I just can't seem to get enough of classic fairy tale rebooting. To date my favorite anthology of these stories is in the book The Rose and the Beast, Fairy Tales Retold by Fracesca Lia Block and Snow White, Blood Red, an anthology by various sci-fi, horror and of course fantasy novelists which take the classic tales and re-spin them.

And, while we are on the subject of rebooting, check out this cool video I got from a friend of Facebook!

Leave us a comment with some of your favorite reboots, we would love to hear from you!

The Firebird in Illustration by Luděk Maňásek.

From: http://mashadutoit.wordpress.com/2010/07/23/the-firebird-by-ludek-manasek/
a really amazing blog that should be followed by lovers of fairytales, and illustration.

Another treasure discovered in a second-hand bookshop:  The Firebird illustrated by Luděk Maňásek.    I could find out very little about him apart from the fact that he studied in Prague. I guess these must be lithographs.  The lines are soft and delicate,  almost furry:

The hero, Prince Ivan setting out on his quest to find the Princess Vasilissa.

Along the way, he helps various creatures, including some orphaned baby birds:

He captures the fabulous firebird:

And here is his bride to be, the Princess Vasilissa, “daughter of three mothers, darling of three grandmothers, sister of nine brothers.”

The firebird helps Prince Ivan to overcome the Deathless Magician Kostchei and his monsters:

The prince and princess returning home:

Now I've Seen Everything WoW!

I have been to several weddings over the last 10 years. Many have been traditional white cake-white dress weddings, while others have....not.... I am talking about fantasy weddings, role play weddings, and sci-fi genre weddings. I have been to a wedding ceremony conducted strictly in Klingon with matching regalia. I have been to a Green Lantern wedding as well as an X-Men wedding (that one was really cool) as well as Renaissance and Medieval themed venues. However, now I feel like I have really seen it all... WoW (in game) character weddings.

Do other people know about this??

Check out this article by Michael Gray from the WoW Insider, 2009.

Simply amazing...

True to my post from the last Christmas season, here is a fun article from NPR about a not so nice 'santa' called The Krampus! Enjoy!
